Spelling Information for the Week of September 11, 2017to September 15, 2017

Dear Parents,

Our spelling words this week include red words, green words, and vocabulary words.

Red Words

“Red Words” are non-phonetic words that do not follow the rules and cannot be sounded out. We will continue to review an additional ten first grade red words.

1st Grade Review Red Words: been, pretty, bye, even, such, put, done, could, live

We will have three new second grade red words, goes, pull, girl. Each student must receive a 100 percent on these three second grade red words for two weeks in a row to show mastery and receive a final grade.

2nd Grade Red Words: goes, pull, girl

Green Words

Our “Green Word” pattern for this week continues to include learning about vowel teams. Vowel teams are often introduced by simply noting that “When two vowels go walking, the first one does the talking.” The vowel team we will be focusing on this week will be oa.” The vowel team “oa” says long o.

Vocabulary Words:

Our spelling test will also include two vocabulary words that are from our reading selection, Bad Guys. The words are qualified and unnoticed. We will be reviewing how to form the past tense of a word by adding –ed, and we will be identifying the prefix un- meaning not.

Homework:

Please write each red word (1st and 2nd Grade) and vocabulary words three times each for homework. Return the completed spelling practice on Tuesday, September 12, 2017. Please note that this week’s final spelling test will be on Friday, September 15, 2017.

Thank you,

Mrs. Arp
