HOMEWORK
Spelling: Please study the Red Words it's, eye, and above and the dictation sheets for -ay and -oe for the spelling test on Friday.
Reading: Nightly reading for 15 to 20 minutes with a parent signature, Monday through Thursday.
Spelling Information for the Week of November 11, 2019 to November 15, 2019
Dear Parents,
RF.2.3 Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words.
Red Word Focus
Our new Red Words will be it’s, eye, and above. Our review Red Words are don’t, push, and its. The students will practice these words for one week and have a final spelling test over these words next week. Please remember that these words are non-decodable words, and they do not follow the rules of phonics.
Green Word Pattern Focus
Our “Green Word” pattern focus for the week will be learning about two new vowel teams. Our two vowel teams are ay and oe. The vowel team ay says long a, and the vowel team oe says long o. Please practice these words as your child brings them home on dictation pages. Weekly spelling words may come from the dictation pages. Students will be expected to apply all classroom information to ten or more “ay” and “oe” words on their Friday spelling test.
Reading Focus
Ask and answer such questions as who, what, where, when, why, and how to demonstrate understanding of key details in a text.
Know and use various text features (e.g., captions, bold print, subheadings, glossaries, indexes, electronic menus, icons) to locate key facts or information in a text efficiently.
Explain how specific images (e.g., a diagram showing how a machine works) contribute to and clarify a text.
Throughout the week, the students will complete activities to identify text and graphic features. The students will identify various text and graphic features within the selection, “Life Cycle of a Butterfly.”
Homework:
Please write each Red Word five times each for homework. Return the completed spelling practice on Tuesday, November 12, 2019. Please note that this week’s final spelling test will be on Friday, November 15, 2019. The spelling test will include the Red Words it’s, eye, and above and the Green Word Patterns ay and oe.
