Spelling Information for the Week of February 3, 2020 to February 7, 2020

Dear Parents,

HOMEWORK: Write each Red Word 5 times each for Monday’s homework.

Red Words: yellow, their, should, sign, buy, often

Red Word Focus

Our 3rd quarter Red Words for the week will be as follows: sign, buy, often, yellow, their, and should. These words are non-decodable words and do not follow the rules of phonics. Students will have a spelling test on Friday to show mastery of these words.

Green Word Focus

RF.2.3 Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words

Our “Green Word” pattern/focus for the week will be the diphthong “ow” as in clown and the vowel team “ow” as in snow. Please practice these words as your child brings them home on dictation pages. Weekly spelling words may come from the dictation pages. Students will be expected to apply all classroom information to ten or more “ow” words on their Friday, February 7th spelling test.

Reading Focus

RL.2.2 Recount stories, including fables and folktales from diverse cultures, and determine their central message, lesson, or moral.

RL.2.9 Compare and contrast two or more versions of the same story (e.g., Cinderella stories) by different authors or from different cultures.

Guided Reading Groups - Our reading focus for the week will continue to be the genre “Fairy Tales.” We will learn to identify character traits for each character, complete a plot diagram, and determine the central message, lesson, or moral of each fairy tale. We will continue to examine the text, “Red Riding Hood,” and the text, “Lon Po Po,” and compare and contrast the two versions of this fairy tale with an emphasis on the characters and character traits. Our writing focus will be opinion writing, writing to persuade (W.2.1), and our grammar focus will be plural nouns. (CCSS.ELA-L2.1C).

Please note that our final spelling test will be on Friday, February 7, 2020.

Thank you,

Mrs. Arp, Mr. Inman
