Reading: Fluency sheet for specified students.

All Students - Read for 15 to 20 minutes each evening. Make sure you are writing down in your planner the title of the book and how many pages and/or minutes that you read. There is a special area on the planner page for this information to be recorded.

Math: Module 4, Lesson 1 Homework

Spelling:

Spelling test on Friday over the Red Words don't and push, as well as, Green Word pattern words that contain the vowel digraph "oo" as in hoot and hook.

Weekly Focus Information for the Week of January 4, 2021 to January 8, 2021

Dear Parents,

Spelling:

This week our 2nd Quarter, second grade “Red Words” will be don’t and push. Our new Green Word Pattern” phonics lesson will be the vowel digraph “oo” as in hoot and hook.

Red Words RF.2.3

“Red Words” are non-phonetic words that do not follow the rules and cannot be sounded out.

Our next two Red Words will be as follows: don’t and push. We will once again study these words throughout the week before we have our weekly spelling test.

The final grade for these words will be on Friday, January 8, 2021.

If you would like to plan ahead, please note that during the week of January 11th to January 15th, we will have a final spelling test for the following 2nd quarter Red Words: many, also, black, these, why, around, don’t, push its, it’s, eye, above.

Homework:

Please write each Red Word three times each on the paper provided for Monday night’s homework. Please write each of the Red Words in a sentence for complete understanding. Don’t forget to use COPS!

Green Word Pattern Focus

RF.2.3 Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words

Our “Green Word” pattern/focus for the week will be the vowel digraph “oo” as in zoo and good. Students will be given dictated words that contain this “oo” pattern throughout the week. Please practice these words as your child brings them home on dictation pages. Weekly spelling words may come from the dictation pages. Students will be expected to apply all classroom information to ten or more “oo” words on their Friday spelling test.

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.2.2

Recount stories, including fables and folktales from diverse cultures, and determine their central message, lesson, or moral.

Reading

We will begin our focus standard of RL.2.2 this week as we read and learn about the elements of a fable during our Reader’s Workshop and our Guided Reading groups. Our writing focus will continue to be informational writing activities within our reading and science studies. (W2.2)

Math

We will begin our next module, Module 4, this week. Our focus will be teaching toward mastery of sums and differences within 100. A parent letter for Module 4, Topic A will be sent home today.

Science/Social Studies –

Our Science focus will continue to be force and motion. We will be conducting experiments in the classroom and completing a new “science journal.”
