Spelling Information for the Week of February 4, 2019 to February 8, 2019

Dear Parents,

HOMEWORK: Write each 4th Quarter Review Red Word 10 times each for Monday’s homework.

Red Words: page, shoe, and tear

Red Word Focus

The 4th Quarter Red Words for the week will be page, shoe, and tear. These words are non-decodable words and do not follow the rules of phonics. Please remember, each student will have two weeks in a row to practice and receive a 100% as a final grade for the Red Words page, shoe, and tear. Students will take a test over these Red Words on Friday, February 8, 2019.

Green Word Focus

RF.2.3 Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words

Our “Green Word” pattern/focus for the week will be the diphthong ow – /ow/as in clown and ow – /o/ long o, as in snow. Please practice these words as your child brings them home on dictation pages. Weekly spelling words may come from the dictation pages. Students will be expected to apply all classroom information to ten or more of the “ow” pattern on their Friday, February 9, 2018, spelling test.

Reading Focus

Our reading focus will continue to be the genre, “Fairy Tales.” Students will identify the elements of fairy tales, recount stories to determine their central message, lesson, or moral, identify character traits, and learn to compare and contrast two versions of the same story. (CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.2.2, 2.9). We will complete our comparing of the two selections, Red Riding Hood and Lon Po Po. Students will be asked to read a fairy tale on their own and identify the fairy tale elements of the selection and complete a plot diagram. Our writing focus will continue to be opinion writing (CCSS. ELA-W2.1), and our grammar focus will be a review of nouns and an introduction to frequently occurring irregular nouns. CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.2.1.B

On Friday, February 8, 2019, the spelling test will include the Red Words page, shoe, and tear and the Green Word Pattern “ow” as in clown and snow.

Thank you,
