Reading Information:

August 30, 2019

Dear Parents,

Welcome to the new school year! One of the most important goals in second grade is to read, read, and read! Research proves that children who read at home have more success in school.

Starting Tuesday, September 3rd, your child is required to read 15 to 20 minutes each evening for homework. Students/parents should write the name of the book read in the “Parent <> Teacher Connection” box that corresponds to the date and day. I am also requesting a signature rather than initials to be written in this box. Students will only need to nightly read, Monday through Thursday evening with a parent signature. All students may read Friday through Sunday if they so desire.

If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to call or email. Thank you for your continued educational support.

Spelling Information for the Week of September 3, 2019, to September 6, 2019

Dear Parents,

We will continue our weekly spelling tests. Each student will have a weekly “Red Word” test and a “Green Word Pattern” test on the same page. This week, I will also grade the spelling sentence that is on the back of the spelling paper.

Red Words

“Red Words” are non-phonetic words that do not follow the rules and cannot be sounded out.

The 1st grade review Red Words for the week will be as follows:

1st Grade Red Words: his, first, take, some who, most, four, give, two, where, says, how

The final grade for these words will be on Friday, September, 2019.

Green Word Pattern

Our “Green Word” pattern for the week will be a review of the vowel team (digraph) “ea.” Vowel teams (digraphs) are often introduced by simply noting that “When two vowels go walking, the first one does the talking.” Students will be expected to apply this information to ten “ea” words on their Friday spelling test. Students will be practicing “ea” words on dictation pages. Please practice these words as your child brings them home. Weekly spelling test words will come from these dictation pages. Students will also be asked to apply his/her knowledge of the “ea” pattern on several other words not found on the dictated pages.

Please note that this week’s spelling test will be on Friday, September 6, 2019 and will include 1st grade Red Words and Green word Pattern, ea words.

Thank you,

Mrs. Arp, Mr. Inman
