Spelling Information for the Week of October 9, 2017, to October 12, 2017

Dear Parents,

HOMEWORK: Write each red word 5 times each for Monday’s homework.

2nd Grade Red Words: very, which

Vocabulary: sighed, panted

RF.2.3 Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words

Red Word Focus

This week our focus will be on the 2nd grade Red Words very and which. These words will also be on our Thursday spelling test. Please remember that these words are non-decodable words and do not follow the rules of phonics.

Green Word Focus

Our “Green Word” focus this week concentrates on the suffix –ed. When something happened some time ago, whether it was a long time ago or “a moment ago,” you usually add -ed to the action or verb. The -ed may be pronounced short i, ( id ), ( d ), or ( t ).

Please practice the –ed words that your child brings home on activity pages and dictation pages. Weekly spelling words may come from these pages. Students will be expected to apply all classroom information to ten or more “-ed” words on their spelling test.

Vocabulary Focus

Our spelling test will also include the new reading vocabulary words sighed and panted. These vocabulary words are from our new realistic fiction book, Freckle Juice. We will continue to use information gained from the illustrations and words in a print or digital text to demonstrate understanding of its characters, setting, or plot. RL.2.7 We will also continue to focus on the standard RL.2.1, ask and answer such questions as who, what, where, when, why, and how to demonstrate understanding of key details in a text.

Please note that our final spelling test for all words will be on Thursday, October 12, 2017.

Thank you,

Mrs. Arp
