Homework:

Read on a nightly basis. A signature is required Monday through Thursday.

Spelling: Write each review Red Word 3 times each for Monday’s homework.

Red Word Focus

We will have a 1st and 2nd quarter Red Word Review this week for the following words: each, call, goes, pull, girl, white, talk, friend, which, very, many, also, black, these, why, around, don’t, push, it’s, its, eye, above. These words are non-decodable words and do not follow the rules of phonics. Students will have to show mastery of these words over a three week period.

Green Word Focus

RF.2.3 Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words

Our “Green Word” pattern/focus for the week will be the review of open/closed syllables and magic-e words. Students will be given words that contain one and/or two open/closed syllables. The students will also identify and make words with the magic-e pattern. Please practice these words as your child brings them home on dictation pages. Weekly spelling words may come from the dictation pages. Students will be expected to apply all classroom information to ten or more “open/closed syllable words and magic-e” words on their Thursday spelling test.

Reading Focus

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.2.1

Ask and answer such questions as who, what, where, when, why, and how to demonstrate understanding of key details in a text.

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.2.7

Use information gained from the illustrations and words in a print or digital text to demonstrate understanding of its characters, setting, or plot.

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.2.5

Describe the overall structure of a story, including describing how the beginning introduces the story and the ending concludes the action.

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.2.6

Acknowledge differences in the points of view of characters, including by speaking in a different voice for each character when reading dialogue aloud.

On Monday, we will complete the reading of our focus text, Miss Holly is Too Jolly. Students will complete novel study questions regarding the text that correlate to the above reading standards and take a comprehension test over the selection. We will continue to use information gained from the illustrations and words in a print or digital text to demonstrate understanding of its characters, setting, or plot (CCSS.ELA- RL.2.7). We will also be reading several versions of the popular book, “The Night Before Christmas.” Our writing focus continues to be informational (W.2.2), and our grammar focus will be nouns, proper nouns, and plural nouns. (CCSS.ELA-L2.1C).

Homework:

For homework, please write the new and review Red Words three times each. Please note that our final spelling test will be on Thursday, December 19, 2019.
