Spelling: Practice the dictation sheets and the end-of-the-quarter Red Words for 2nd and 3rd grade.

Weekly Focus Information for the Week of April 26, 2021 to April 30, 2021

Dear Parents,

Spelling:

This week we will review our 3rd Quarter, 3rd Grade Red Words. The review words are as follows: against, brought, another, parent, enough, bury, clothes, sound, whole, through, world, and anyone. We will also review our 4th quarter 2nd grade Red Words. These review words are as follows: almost, does, eight, father, part, floor, sure, ghost, oil, page, shoe, and tear. We will study these words throughout the week before we have our final spelling test on Friday, April 30.

Our “Green Word Pattern” review phonics lesson this week will be magic-e words.

Red Words

RF.2.3 Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words

“Red Words” are non-phonetic words that do not follow the rules and cannot be sounded out.

Our 3rd quarter 3rd grade Red Words are as follows: against, brought, another, parent, enough, bury, clothes, sound, whole, through, world, and anyone. We will study these words throughout the week before we have our final spelling test on Friday, April 30.

Green Word Pattern Focus

RF.2.3 Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words

Our “Green Word” pattern/focus for the week will be a review of magic-e. Weekly spelling words will come from the dictation pages brought home in your child’s folder. Students will be expected to apply all classroom information to ten or more words on their Friday spelling test.

This week begins our study of baseball! Throughout this week and next week, we will be learning the history of baseball, the rules of baseball, the famous baseball players of the past and present, and reading a wonderful realistic fiction book entitled, The Hero Two Doors Down.

The author of this book is Sharon Robinson, the daughter of the famous “Jackie Robinson.”

Writing

With guidance and support from adults, use a variety of digital tools to produce and publish writing, including in collaboration with peers.

Describe how words and phrases (e.g., regular beats, alliteration, rhymes, repeated lines) supply rhythm and meaning in a story, poem, or song.

Our writing focus this year will conclude with the writing of several poems that include the poetry elements of rhyme, alliteration, and repetition.

Math

CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.2.NBT.B.7

Add and subtract within 1000, using concrete models or drawings and strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction; relate the strategy to a written method. Understand that in adding or subtracting three-digit numbers, one adds or subtracts hundreds and hundreds, tens and tens, ones and ones; and sometimes it is necessary to compose or decompose tens or hundreds.

CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.2.NBT.B.9

Explain why addition and subtraction strategies work, using place value and the properties of operations.1

This week we will review adding and subtracting two-3 digit numbers using the vertical algorithm. Students may use a place value chart for review if needed. We will also review various methods for subtracting from multiples of 100 and from numbers with zero in the tens place.

Science/Social Studies

This week we will complete our Social Studies standard regarding bar graphs that can be used to compare quantities (SS.13), resources that can be used in various ways (SS.14), and how most people around the world work in jobs in which they produce specific goods and services (SS.15) We will also begin our study of weather and air. (2.P.2.1, 2.2)
