Spelling Information for the Week of August 28, 2017 to September 1, 2017

Dear Parents,

This week begins our first week of spelling. Our spelling words include red words, green words, and vocabulary words.

Red Words

“Red Words” are non-phonetic words that do not follow the rules and cannot be sounded out. We will begin a review of ten first grade red words and two, new second grade red words. These words are as follows:

1st Grade Red Words: again, blue, first, take, some, who, four, two, where, says

2nd Grade Red Words: call, each

Green Words

Our “Green Word” list for the week includes learning about “magic-e.” Students have learned the name of each vowel and its short sound. They have been conditioned to respond to the symbols of the vowels with a short sound and are now asked to change their response to the established cue. When the one-syllable word ends in e, they must change their response to the long sound of the vowel. Students will be expected to apply this information to ten “magic-e” words on their Friday spelling test. There will be dictation pages that will be completed on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday in the classroom. Please practice these words as your child brings them home. Weekly spelling words will come from the dictation pages or words that have a similar magic-e pattern.

Vocabulary Words:

Our spelling test will also include three vocabulary words that are from our reading selection, “First Day Jitters.” These words are chuckled, fumbled, and trudged. Each word is a form of its root word and is the past tense of the word.

Thank you,

Mrs. Arp
