Spelling Information for the Week of November 12, 2018, to November 16, 2018
Dear Parents,
New Red Words: sign, buy, often
Review Red Words: should, their, yellow
Red Word Focus
RF.2.3 Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words.
This week we will review the Red Words should, their, and yellow. Our new Red Words are sign, buy, and often. Please remember that these words are non-decodable words, and they do not follow the rules of phonics.
Green Word Pattern Focus
Our “Green Word” pattern focus for the week will once again be learning about vowel teams. Our two vowel teams are ay and oe. The vowel team ay says long a, and the vowel team oe says long o. Please practice these words as your child brings them home on dictation pages. Weekly spelling words will come from the dictation pages. Students will also be expected to apply these two patterns to additional “ay” and “oe” words on their Friday spelling test.
Reading Focus
CCSS.RI.2.5
Know and use various text features (e.g., captions, bold print, subheadings, glossaries, indexes, electronic menus, icons) to locate key facts or information in a text efficiently.
The students will continue to read nonfiction texts from last week. Mrs. Arp’s guided reading groups will be reading from the informational text, Pilgrims. Mrs. Dillion’s guided reading groups will read from the informational text, What Was the First Thanksgiving. The students will have the following vocabulary words. Mrs. Arp: Pilgrim, cargo, Mayflower Compact, scouting, shallop, sachem, wetus, moccasins, scurvy, pewter; Mrs. Dillion: Puritan, Pilgrim, Mayflower Compact, brook, sachem, wetu, pewter, draughts, solemn, mishoon.
Please note, the students will be expected to know and write our new and review Red words and the “–ay” and “oe” Green Word patterns to words on the Friday, November 16, 2018, Spelling Test.
Thank you,
Mrs. Arp
