Spelling Information for the Week of April 16, 2018 to April 20, 2018

Dear Parents,

Red Word Focus

The next two 4th quarter Red Words are sure and floor. The students will also continue to review the words eight and tear for a final test on Friday. We will practice all of these words in the classroom throughout the week. Our test will be on Friday, April 20, 2018.

Green Word Focus

RF.2.3 Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding

words

Our new Green Word pattern will be “consonant-le endings.” The endings are ble (stumble), fle (sniffle), tle (battle), and dle (handle). To facilitate the decoding of a word, these common endings can be cut off. Please practice the new Green Word pattern words as your child brings them home on dictation pages. Weekly spelling words will come from the dictation pages. Students will be expected to apply all classroom information to ten or more - ble, fle, tle, dle words on their Friday spelling test.

Reading Focus

Our reading focus will continue to be the historical topic of the legendary Titanic, the “Unsinkable Ship.” The students will be reading nonfiction, historical fiction, magazines, newspaper articles, and watching videos describing all aspects of its voyage. CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.2.9 Compare and contrast the most important points presented by two texts on the same topic. We will also continue to discuss and identify figurative language within stories and poems. CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.2.4 Describe how words and phrases (e.g., regular beats, alliteration, rhymes, repeated lines) supply rhythm and meaning in a story, poem, or song.) Our writing focus will include the topic of the Titanic and the application of adjectives and adverbs within their journal writing activities. (CCSS.ELA.L.2.1.E); CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.2.3 Write narratives in which they recount a well-elaborated event or short sequence of events, include details to describe actions, thoughts, and feelings, use temporal words to signal event order, and provide a sense of closure.)

Please note that our spelling test for the week will be on Friday, April 20, 2018, and will include the Red words sure, floor, eight, and tear and the Green Word Pattern "consonant le," ble, fle, tle, and dle.

Thank you,

Mrs. Arp
