Reading Logs for the 3rd Nine Weeks

begins this week, January 12, 2015.

Please note that two books must be read by Interim time. Once again, your child will be responsible for turning in four reading logs per nine weeks.

*Homeward Bound books - please read on a nightly basis. Students are required to read these books at home. Each student needs to turn in 2 reading log sheets per Interim, and a total of 4 reading log sheets per report card. Your child will receive a grade for turning in his/her completed reading logs.

Spelling: Test over red words and gold words on Thursday, January 15, 2015

This week the students will continue to learn about “magic e.” The concept of magic e is a difficult one for many children. They have learned the name of each vowel and its short sound. The students, conditioned to respond to the symbols of the vowels with a short sound, are now asked to change their response to the established cue. When the one-syllable word ends in e, they must change their response to the long sound of the vowel. This week we will add two-syllable magic e words.

When introducing this new sound for the vowel, we prefer to use the term “name of the vowel” rather than “long vowel,” as the students have been taught that the vowel has a name and “says” a particular sound. We will practice spelling and writing words with “magic e” during class each day.

Our red words will now be from the third grade required red word list. Students will be required weekly to spell three “red words” on his/her final spelling test on Thursday. Our red words for this week are about, across, and against.

Our “Gold Vocabulary” words are as follows:

    1. millions 5. weaker

    2. choices 6. wrapped

    3. drift 7. disgusting

    4. simple 8. decide

Please note that this week’s final spelling test will be on Thursday, January 15, 2015.
