Spelling Information for the Week of September 30, 2019 to October 4, 2019

Dear Parents,

Our spelling words this week will be our next five Second Grade first quarter Red Words and the Green Word spelling pattern for –nk endings.

RF.2.3 Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words

Red Words

“Red Words” are non-phonetic words that do not follow the rules and cannot be sounded out.

Our 2nd grade Red Words for the week are as follows: white, talk, friend, which, and very. Please review the words girl, each, call, goes, and pull for a complete and final summative test in two weeks.

RF.2.3 Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words

Green Words

This week our “Green Word” focus will be learning about syllable division regarding words with –nk endings. If –nk appears between two vowels with another consonant, treat it as one consonant. The students will be learning the following combinations of sounds: -ink, -ank, -onk, and –unk. These endings are taught to simplify the breaking down of words for spelling and reading. Please practice the –nk words that are on activity sheets and dictation sheets that your child brings home. Weekly spelling words will come from these pages. Students may also need to apply all classroom information to words not on the activity or dictation pages. The spelling test with “-nk” words will be on Friday, October 4, 2019.
