Spelling Information for the Week of January 22, 2018 to January 26, 2018

Dear Parents,

HOMEWORK: Write each 3rd Quarter Red Word 5 times each for Monday’s homework.

Red Words: other, sister, always, brother

Red Word Focus

The new 3rd Quarter Red Words for the week will be the words other and sister. These words are non-decodable words and do not follow the rules of phonics. The review Red Words are always and brother. Please remember, each student must receive a 100 percent for two weeks in a row to receive a final grade for the Red Words always and brother. Students will take a test over these four Red Words on Friday, January 26, 2018.

Green Word Focus

RF.2.3 Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words

Our “Green Word” pattern/focus for the week will continue to be the r-controlled vowels. These are introduced as the three / ər /’s or the bossy r. The second most commonly used of the three / ər /’s is ir as in bird. The least commonly used of the three / ər /’s is ur as in burn, and it is our last choice when making an educated guess about how an / ər / word is spelled. Please practice these words as your child brings them home on dictation pages. Weekly spelling words may come from the dictation pages. Students will be expected to apply all classroom information to ten or more of the / ər / patterns on their Friday, January 26, 2018, spelling test.

Reading Focus

We will continue our reading focus with the genre, “Fairy Tales.” Students will identify the elements of fairy tales, recount stories to determine their central message, lesson, or moral, identify character traits, and learn to compare and contrast two versions of the same story. (CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.2.2, 2.9) Our writing focus continues to be opinion writing (CCSS. ELA-W2.1), and our grammar focus will be verbs/irregular verbs.(CCSS.ELA-L2.1d).

The final spelling test for the Red Words always and brother and Green Word Patterns ir and ur will be on Friday, January 26, 2018.

Thank you,

Mrs. Arp
