Spelling Information for the Week of May 1 to May 5, 2017

Dear Parents,

Green Word Study

Our “Green Word” pattern for the week will be the review of the vowel digraphs or “vowel teams” ea, oa, ai, ee, ay, and oe. The concept of each vowel team has been introduced by simply noting that “When two vowels go walking, the first one does the talking.”

We will practice spelling and writing words with “ea, oa, ai, ee, ay, and oe” during class each day. Please practice these words as your child brings them home on dictation pages. Weekly spelling words may come from the dictation pages. Students will be expected to apply all classroom information to ten or more “ea, oa, ai, ee, ay, and oe” words on their Friday spelling test.

Vocabulary Study

Our spelling test will also include the vocabulary words hollow, jabbered, dangle, and shrill. These vocabulary words are from our new selection, Little House on the Prairie, that correlates to our biography reading selections and our present informational writing. We will continue to use information gained from the illustrations and words in a print or digital text to demonstrate understanding of its characters, setting, or plot. RL.2.7

Red Word Study

We will once again review the red words oil, page, shoe, and tear. These words are non-decodable words and do not follow the rules of phonics. Please remember, each student must receive a 100 percent for two weeks in a row to receive a final grade for these red words.

Please note that this final spelling test will be on Friday, May 5, 2017.

Thank you,

Mrs. Arp
