Homework for August 25, 2014

Post date: Aug 25, 2014 8:43:24 PM

Dear Parents,

This week begins our first week of spelling words. Our spelling words for the week include three second grade red words and ten first grade red words for review. “Red words” are non-phonetic words that do not follow the rules and cannot be sounded out. The words that cannot be sounded out must be learned in a multisensory way for storage into long-term memory. Red words, also known as sight words or popcorn words, are red because red is a warning color that tells students to stop decoding and to use their prior knowledge and/or memorization techniques. Ten green words will also be given which include the digraphs ch, qu, sh, th, and wh. These words are introduced during class and similar words with the practiced digraphs will be on the Friday spelling test.

Please have your child practice writing the red words three times each on the pages provided. This homework is due on Tuesday, August 26, 2014. The final spelling test will be on Friday, August 29, 2014.
