and the Week of February 19, 2019 to February 22, 2019

Dear Parents,

HOMEWORK: Write each 4th Quarter Review Red Word 10 times each for Tuesday’s homework.

Red Words: page, shoe, and tear

Red Word Focus

The 4th Quarter Red Words for the week will be page, shoe, and tear. These words are non-decodable words and do not follow the rules of phonics. Please remember, each student will have two weeks in a row to practice and receive a 100% as a final grade for the Red Words page, shoe, and tear. Students will take a test over these Red Words on Thursday, February 14, 2019.

Green Word Focus

RF.2.3 Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words

Our “Green Word” pattern/focus for the next two weeks will be open, closed, and magic-e two syllable words. Please practice these words as your child brings them home on dictation pages. Weekly spelling words will come from the dictation pages. Students will be expected to apply all classroom information to ten or more open, closed, and magic-e two syllable words on their Friday, February 22, 2019, spelling test.

Reading Focus

Our reading focus will center around the famous dogsledding race, the Iditarod, and the history associated with this event. The students will be reading one of the following selections: Balto of the Blue Dawn, Silver, or Dog Diaries, Togo. (CCSS.ELA- ITERACY.RL.2.3) Students will complete the reading of each text and a book study within our Guided Reading time each day in the classroom. Our writing focus will continue to be opinion writing (CCSS. ELA-W2.1), and our grammar focus will be a review of nouns, proper nouns, and plural nouns with an introduction to frequently occurring irregular nouns. CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.2.1.B

On Thursday, February 14, 2019, the spelling test will include the Red Words page, shoe, and tear. Next week we will have the final spelling test for the Green Word Pattern “open, closed, and magic-e two syllable words.”

Thank you,
