Spelling Information for the Week of March 2, 2015

Next week our students will be learning about the “r-Controlled Vowels.” They are introduced as the three bossy r’s. The spelling er is the most frequently used of the three

and should be the first choice when making an educated guess about how to spell a word with a bossy r sound. The second most commonly used of the three bossy r’s is the ir.

The ir, as in bird, has a dotted i. A bird has a dotted i too. The least commonly used of the three bossy r’s is ur as in burn, and it is our last choice when making an educated guess about how a bossy r word is spelled.

Our third grade red words for the week are knock, listen, and meant. There will be no spelling practice other than the vowel team dictation pages that will be completed on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday in the classroom. Please practice these words as your child brings them home. Weekly spelling words will come from the dictation pages or words that have a similar bossy r pattern.

Please note that this week’s final spelling test will be on Friday, March 6, 2015.
