Spelling Information for the Week of November 4, 2019 to November 8, 2019

Dear Parents,

RF.2.3 Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words.

Red Word Focus

Our new Red Words will be don’t, push, and its. The students will practice these words for two weeks and have a final spelling test over these words on the third week. Please remember that these words are non-decodable words, and they do not follow the rules of phonics.

Green Word Pattern Focus

Our “Green Word” pattern focus for the week will be learning about ck and k. C and k say /ck/ separately and together. When they are together, as in black, they are usually at the end of a word. They never appear together at the beginning of a word. When you hear the (k) sound after a short vowel in a one-syllable word, it is usually spelled with ck. When you hear the /k/ sound after a vowel team or a consonant comes right before it, it is usually spelled with just a k.

Please practice these words as your child brings them home on dictation pages. Weekly spelling words may come from the dictation pages. Students will be expected to apply all class-room information to ten or more “ck” words and “k” words on their Friday spelling test.

Reading Focus

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.2.1

Ask and answer such questions as who, what, where, when, why, and how to demonstrate understanding of key details in a text.

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.2.5

Know and use various text features (e.g., captions, bold print, subheadings, glossaries, indexes, electronic menus, icons) to locate key facts or information in a text efficiently.

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.2.7

Explain how specific images (e.g., a diagram showing how a machine works) contribute to and clarify a text.

This week, students will be reading from informational texts to identify text and graphic features. Mrs. Arp’s Guided Reading group will be reading from the selection, “Milton Hershey – Business Leaders.” Mr. Inman’s Guided Reading Groups will be reading from the text, “Milton Hershey: Hershey’s Chocolate Creator.”

Homework:

Please write each Red Word five times each for homework. Return the completed spelling practice on Tuesday, November 5, 2019. Please note that this week’s final spelling test will be on Friday, November 8, 2019, and will include the Red Words don’t, push, and its, and the Green Word Patterns, ck and k.

Thank you,

Mrs. Arp
