Spelling Information for the Week of March 5, 2018 to March 9, 2018

Dear Parents,

Red Word Focus

The new 3rd Quarter review Red Words for the week will be buy and often. These words are non-decodable words and do not follow the rules of phonics. Please remember, each student must receive a 100 percent for two weeks in a row to receive a final grade for the Red Words. Students will take a final test over the words buy and often on the Friday, March 9, 2018, spelling test.

Green Word Focus

RF.2.3 Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words

Our “Green Word” pattern/focus for the week will be a magic e review. Please practice these words as your child brings them home on dictation pages. Weekly spelling words may come from the dictation pages. Students will be expected to apply all classroom information to ten or more magic e words on their Friday, March 9, 2018, spelling test.

Reading Focus

We will complete the reading of our book selection, Stone Fox with the genre, “Realistic Fiction.” Students will review the elements of a fictional story and continue to demonstrate understanding of key details in a text by asking and answering questions (who, what, where, when, why, and how). They will also be asked to identify how a character in a story responds to major events and challenges throughout the reading selection. (CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.2.1, 2.3) Students will also be reading the informational text, The Last Great Race. CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.2.2 Identify the main topic of a multi-paragraph text as well as the focus of specific paragraphs within the text. CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.2.3 Describe the connection between a series of historical events, scientific ideas or concepts, or steps in technical procedures in a text. CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.2.5 Know and use various text features (e.g., captions, bold print, subheadings, glossaries, indexes, electronic menus, icons) to locate key facts or information in a text efficiently. Our writing focus continues to be opinion writing (CCSS. ELA-W2.1, and RL.2.1) with an emphasis on reading closely to generate longer more detailed letter writing, and our grammar focus will be to correctly use adjectives and adverbs and to choose between them depending on what is to be modified. (CCSS.ELA.L.2.1.E)

This week will be the final spelling test for the Red Words buy and often. Our weekly Green Word Pattern will be the review of magic e words. The test over all words will be on Friday, March 9, 2018.

Thank you,

Mrs. Arp
