Reading: This week begins our "January Reading Log." The "January Reading Log" is due on January 31, 2018. Students must read 20 minutes each day/night for a total of 20 days/nights of reading to have a completed reading log for the month of January.

Math: Lesson 7, Module 4

Spelling:

Review Red Words: each, call, goes, pull, girl, white, talk, friend, which, and very.

Please note that we did not get to review our open/closed syllable words today during class; therefore, we will not have a spelling test over "magic e" words and open/closed syllable words tomorrow. I will review both of these concepts tomorrow, but I will not give a test tomorrow, Friday, January 5, 2018.

Spelling Information for the Week of January 3, 2018 to January 5, 2018

Dear Parents,

Red Word Focus

The Red Words for the week will be a review of all of the first quarter Red Words. Next week, there will be a review of all of the second quarter Red Words. Please note, students will take a test over all of the first quarter Red Words and second quarter Red Words next Thursday, January 11, 2018.

Green Word Focus

RF.2.3 Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words.

Our “Green Word” pattern/focus for the week will be the review of “Open/Closed Syllables” and “Magic e.” Students will be given words that contain the “Magic e” pattern and “Open/Closed one syllable words.” Please practice these words as your child brings them home on dictation pages. Weekly spelling words may come from the dictation pages. Students will be expected to apply all classroom information to ten or more “magic e” words and “open/closed one syllable words” on their Friday spelling test.

Reading Focus

Our reading focus for the week will begin our unit on the genre, “Fairy Tales.” Students will identify the elements of fairy tales, recount stories to determine their central message, lesson, or moral, identify character traits, and learn to compare and contrast two versions of the same story. (CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.2.2, 2.9) Our writing focus continues to be opinion writing (CCSS.ELA-W2.1), and our grammar focus will be pronouns/reflexive pronouns (CCSS.ELA-L2.1C).

Please note that our final spelling test for this week will be on Friday, January 5, 2018, and it will only include “magic e and open/closed one syllable words from dictation.

Thank you,

Mrs. Arp
