Red Word Focus
Our Red Word test this Thursday will be over all of the 3rd quarter Red Words. This is a summative test for all 3rd quarter Red Words. These words are as follows: yellow, their, should, sign, buy, often, always, brother, other, sister, knew, and were. These words are non-decodable words and do not follow the rules of phonics. Students will have a spelling test on Thursday to show mastery of these words.
Green Word Focus
RF.2.3 Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words
Our “Green Word” pattern/focus for the week will be the review of open and closed one and two syllable
words. Students will complete activities for one and two syllable words each day. Please practice these words
as your child brings them home on dictation pages. Weekly spelling words may come from the dictation pages.
Students will be expected to apply all classroom information to ten or more open and closed, one or two
syllable words on their Thursday, February 13th spelling test.
Reading Focus
RL.2.2Recount stories, including fables and folktales from diverse cultures, and determine their central message, lesson, or moral.
RL.2.9 Compare and contrast two or more versions of the same story (e.g., Cinderella stories) by different authors or from different cultures.
Guided Reading Groups - Our reading focus for the week will continue to be the genre “Fairy Tales.” Students will read and complete a plot diagram for a specific fairy tale while identifying the moral or lesson of the story. Students will also complete a graphic organizer comparing and contrasting two versions of the same fairy tale, “Red Riding Hood” and “Cinderella.” Our writing focus will be opinion writing, writing to persuade (W.2.1), which entails identifying a favorite character in “Red Riding Hood” or “Lon Po Po.” Our grammar focus will be plural nouns. (CCSS.ELA-L2.1C).
Please note that our final spelling test will be on Thursday, February 13, 2020.
Thank you,
