Spelling Information for the Week of February 27, 2017, to March 3, 2017
Dear Parents,
Green Word Study
The “Green Word” pattern for the week will be the understanding of a closed syllable and an open syllable. A closed syllable is one in which the single vowel makes a short sound. An open syllable contains a single vowel that is not followed by another letter: she, he, no, so, and go.
Please practice the open and closed syllable words that your child brings home on activity pages and dictation pages. Weekly spelling words may come from both of these pages. Students will be expected to apply all classroom information to ten or more open/closed syllable words on their Friday, March 3rd spelling test.
Vocabulary Study
Our spelling test will include the new reading vocabulary words Alaska, Iditarod, trail, and musher. These vocabulary words are from our Iditarod activities for the week that lead into our new realistic fiction book, “Stone Fox.” We will continue to use information gained from the illustrations and words in a print or digital text to demonstrate understanding of its characters, setting, or plot. RL.2.7
Red Word Study
The two new red words are buy and often. These words will be on the Friday spelling test. Please remember that these words are non-decodable words and do not follow the rules of phonics. Each student must receive a 100 percent for two weeks in a row to receive a final grade for all red words.
Please note that our final spelling test for all words will be on Friday, March 1, 2017.
Thank you,
Mrs. Arp
