Spelling Information for the Week of October 21, 2019 to October 24, 2019

Dear Parents,

RF.2.3 Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words.

Red Word Focus

We will continue our study of the 2nd quarter Red Words. Our new Red Words for the week are these, why, and around. We will pre-test these words on Thursday and have a final test over all six words the following week. Please remember that these words are non-decodable words, and they do not follow the rules of phonics. (Review Words – many, black, and also.)

Green Word Pattern Focus

Our “Green Word” pattern focus for the week will be the vowel digraph, ee, as in see and meet, also referred to as a “vowel team.” The concept of the vowel team “ee” may be introduced by simply noting that “When two vowels go walking, the first one does the talking.” Please practice these words as your child brings them home on dictation pages. Weekly spelling words may come from the dictation pages. Students will also be expected to apply this pattern to additional “ee” words on their Thursday spelling test.

Our Red Word and Green Word pattern test will be on Thursday, October 21, 2019. Please also study the Red Words many, also, and black for a formative test the following week.

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.2.1

Ask and answer such questions as who, what, where, when, why, and how to demonstrate understanding of key details in a text.

This week and part of next week, we will be reading the text, “Freckle Juice,” within our whole group Guided Reading activities. We will take a comprehension test and a vocabulary test over the selection next week.

Please note that this week’s final spelling test will be on Thursday, October 24, 2019.

Thank you,

Mrs. Arp
