Weekly Focus Information for the Week of February 22, 2021 to February 26, 2021

Dear Parents,

Spelling:

This week we will review our two 2nd grade, 3rd quarter Red Words, knew and were; and, several students will review our 3rd grade, 2nd quarter Red Words, already and mother. Our new “Green Word Pattern” phonics lesson will be the diphthong “ow” as in cow and "ow" as in snow.

Red Words

RF.2.3 Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words

“Red Words” are non-phonetic words that do not follow the rules and cannot be sounded out.

Our “Red Word” spelling words this week will once again be the Red Words: 3rd Grade - already and mother; 2nd Grade - knew and were. We will study these words throughout the week before we have our weekly spelling test.

The spelling test for these words will be on Friday, February 26, 2021.

Green Word Pattern Focus

RF.2.3 Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words

Our “Green Word” pattern/focus for the week will be “ow” as in cow and "ow" as in snow. Please practice these words as your child brings them home on dictation pages. Weekly spelling words may come from the dictation pages. Students will be expected to apply all classroom information to ten or more “ow” words on their Friday spelling test.

Homework:

Write each Red Word three times each and use each word in a complete sentence. Don't forget to use COPS!

Reading

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.2.9

Compare and contrast two or more versions of the same story (e.g., Cinderella stories) by different authors or from different cultures. RL.2.2

Our guided reading activities this week will be reading and learning the story elements for "Tall Tales." Our writing focus will continue to be informational writing activities within our reading and social studies. (W2.2)

Math

CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.2.NBT.B.7

Add and subtract within 1000, using concrete models or drawings and strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction; relate the strategy to a written method. Understand that in adding or subtracting three-digit numbers, one adds or subtracts hundreds and hundreds, tens and tens, ones and ones; and sometimes it is necessary to compose or decompose tens or hundreds.

CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.2.NBT.B.9

Explain why addition and subtraction strategies work, using place value and the properties of operations.1

We will take a Module 4, Lessons 17 - 22 Quiz, and complete Lessons 22 - 25, with a Lesson 22 - 25 Quiz on Friday.

Science/Social Studies

Our Science focus will be conducting experiments showing how air is present in the atmosphere.
