Spelling Information for the Week of August 27, 2018, to August 31, 2018

Dear Parents,

The weekly “Red Word” and “Green Word Pattern” information is as follows:

Red Words

“Red Words” are non-phonetic words that do not follow the rules and cannot be sounded out.

1st Grade Red Words: how, put, odd, may, bye, door, even, any, way, once, been

We will continue a review of eleven first grade red words. The final grade for these words will be on Friday, August 31, 2018.

Final test for 2nd Grade Red Words: each, call, goes

New 2nd Grade Red Words: pull, girl, white

The next three second grade red words are pull, girl, and white. Each student must receive a 100% on all three second grade red words for two weeks in a row to show mastery and receive a final grade.

Green Word Pattern

Our “Green Word” pattern for the week will be a review of the vowel team (digraph) “ea.” Vowel teams (digraphs) are often introduced by simply noting that “When two vowels go walking, the first one does the talking.” Students will be expected to apply this information to ten “ea” words on their Friday spelling test. Students will be practicing “ea” words on dictation pages. Please practice these words as your child brings them home. Weekly spelling test words will come from these dictation pages. Students will also be asked to apply his/her knowledge of the “ea” pattern on several other words not found on the dictated pages.

Please note that this week’s final spelling test will be on Friday, August 31, 2018, and will include 1st and 2nd grade red words and Green Word “ea” pattern words.

Thank you,

Mrs. Arp
