Spelling Information for the Week of October 2, 2017, to October 6, 2017
Dear Parents,
RF.2.3 Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words
Red Word Focus
This will be the final week of testing for the 2nd grade Red Words friend, talk, and white. These words will be on the Friday spelling test. Please remember that these words are non-decodable words and do not follow the rules of phonics.
Green Word Focus
This week our “Green Word” focus will be learning about syllable division regarding words with –ng and –nk endings. If –ng or –nk appear between two vowels with another consonant, treat it as one consonant. The students will be learning these combinations of sounds: -ink, -ank, -onk, -unk, -ang, -ing, -ong, and –ung. These endings are taught to simplify the breaking down of words for spelling and reading.
Please practice the –ng and –nk words that your child brings home on activity pages and dictation pages. Weekly spelling words may come from these pages. Students will be expected to apply all classroom information to ten or more “-ng and -nk” words on their Friday, October 6th spelling test.
Vocabulary Focus
Our spelling test will also include the new reading vocabulary words moaning (vowel team oa) and dealing (vowel team ea). These vocabulary words are from our new realistic fiction book, Freckle Juice. We will continue to use information gained from the illustrations and words in a print or digital text to demonstrate understanding of its characters, setting, or plot. RL.2.7 Next week, we will also focus on the standard RL.2.1, ask and answer such questions as who, what, where, when, why, and how to demonstrate understanding of key details in a text.
Please note that our final spelling test for all words will be on Friday, October 6, 2017.
Thank you,
Mrs. Arp
