Spelling Information for the Week of April 2, 2018 to April 6, 2018

Dear Parents,

HOMEWORK: Write each 4th Quarter Red Word 10 times each for Monday’s homework.

Red Words: does and almost

Red Word Focus

This week the students will be introduced to the first two Red Words of the 4th quarter. The words are almost and does. We will practice these words throughout the week in the classroom. Students will take a test over these words on the Friday, April 6, 2018, spelling test.

Green Word Focus

RF.2.3 Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words

Our new Green Word pattern will be the vowel team ea as in “head.” Thus far, students have been introduced to one pronunciation for the vowel digraph team ea as in eat. Please practice the new Green Word pattern words as your child brings them home on dictation pages. Weekly spelling words may come from the dictation pages. Students will be expected to apply all classroom information to ten or more ea words on their Friday, April 6, 2018, spelling test.

Reading Focus

Our reading for the week will focus on figurative language. Students will look closely at stories and poems that contain alliteration, hyperbole, personification, onomatopoeia, simile, metaphors, repeated lines, regular beats, and rhymes. (Craft and Structure: CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.2.4 Describe how words and phrases (e.g., regular beats, alliteration, rhymes, repeated lines) supply rhythm and meaning in a story, poem, or song.) Our writing focus will include these topics with concentrated identification and application. Our grammar focus will continue to be to correctly use adjectives and adverbs and to choose between them depending on what is to be modified. (CCSS.ELA.L.2.1.E)

Please note that our spelling test for the week will be on Friday, April 6, 2018, and will include the Red words almost and does and the Green Word Pattern ea as in head.

Thank you,

Mrs. Arp
