Homework:

Reading: Nightly reading for 15 to 20 minutes with a parent signature, Monday through Thursday.

Reading: Study vocabulary words for the book, "Miss Holly is Too Jolly."

There will be a test over the words on Friday, December 13th.

Spelling Information for the Week of December 9, 2019 to December 13, 2019

Dear Parents,

HOMEWORK: Write each Red Word 5 times each for Monday’s homework.

Red Words: always, brother, other

Red Word Focus

The first three, 3rd quarter Red Words for the week are always, brother, and other. These words are non-decodable words and do not follow the rules of phonics. Students will have to show mastery of these words over a three week period.

Green Word Focus

RF.2.3 Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words

Our “Green Word” pattern/focus for the week will be the diphthong ou - /ow/ as in ouch. Students will be given words that contain the ou pattern throughout the week. Please practice these words as your child brings them home on dictation pages. Weekly spelling words may come from the dictation pages. Students will be expected to apply all classroom information to ten or more “ou” words on their Friday spelling test.

Reading Focus

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.2.1

Ask and answer such questions as who, what, where, when, why, and how to demonstrate understanding of key details in a text.

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.2.7

Use information gained from the illustrations and words in a print or digital text to demonstrate understanding of its characters, setting, or plot.

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.2.5

Describe the overall structure of a story, including describing how the beginning introduces the story and the ending concludes the action.

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.2.6

Acknowledge differences in the points of view of characters, including by speaking in a different voice for each character when reading dialogue aloud.

Our focus text for the week will be the reading of the text, Miss Holly is Too Jolly. Students will complete novel study questions regarding the text and the reading standards. We will continue to use information gained from the illustrations and words in a print or digital text to demonstrate understanding of its characters, setting, or plot (CCSS.ELA- RL.2.7). Our writing focus continues to be informational (W.2.2), and our grammar focus will be nouns, proper nouns, and plural nouns. (CCSS.ELA-L2.1C).

Please note that our final spelling test will be on Friday, December 13, 2019.
