Spelling Information for the Week of January 13, 2020, to January 17, 2020

Dear Parents,

HOMEWORK: Write each Red Word 5 times each for Monday’s homework.

Red Words: knew, sister, were, always, brother, other

Red Word Focus

We will review throughout the week and take a test on Friday over the following 3rd quarter Red Words: knew, sister, were, always, brother, and other. These words are non-decodable words and do not follow the rules of phonics. Students will have to show mastery of these words on their Friday spelling test.

Green Word Focus

RF.2.3 Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words

Our “Green Word” pattern/focus for the week will continue to be the r-controlled vowels. These are introduced as the three / ər /’s or the bossy r. The second most commonly used of the three / ər /’s is ir as in bird. Please practice these words as your child brings them home on dictation pages. Weekly spelling words may come from the dictation pages. Students will be expected to apply all classroom information to ten or more of the ir patterns on their Friday, January 17th spelling test.

Reading Focus

RL.2.9 Compare and contrast two or more versions of the same story (e.g., Cinderella stories) by different authors or from different cultures.

RF.2.4 Read with sufficient accuracy and fluency to support comprehension.

Our focus for the week will continue to be the reading of fables, and we will also begin reading various fairy tales. We will learn to identify the elements of a fable, character traits of each character, and the moral or lesson of the fable. We will also learn to identify the elements of a fairy tale and compare and contrast two versions of the same fairy tale. Our writing focus continues to be informational (W.2.2), and our grammar focus will be nouns, proper nouns, and plural nouns. (CCSS.ELA-L2.1C).

Please note that our final spelling test will be on Friday, January 17, 2020. Please note that this is a two-hour early release day.

Thank you,

Mrs. Arp, Mr. Inman
