Spelling Information for the Week of September 9, 2019, to September 13, 2019

Dear Parents,

We will continue our weekly spelling tests. Each student will have a weekly “Red Word” test and a “Green Word Pattern” test on the same page. This week, I will also grade the spelling sentence that is on the back of the spelling paper.

Red Words

“Red Words” are non-phonetic words that do not follow the rules and cannot be sounded out.

The 1st grade review Red Words for the week will be as follows: put, odd, may, bye, door, even, any, way, once, been, could

The final grade for these words will be on Friday, September 13, 2019.

Green Word Pattern

Our “Green Word” pattern for the week will be the vowel team (digraph) “oa.” Vowel teams (digraphs) are often introduced by simply noting that “When two vowels go walking, the first one does the talking.” The vowel team “oa” says long o. Students will be expected to apply this information to ten “oa” words on their Friday spelling test. Students will be practicing “oa” words on dictation pages. Please practice these words as your child brings them home. Weekly spelling test words will come from these dictation pages. Students will also be asked to apply his/her knowledge of the “oa” pattern on several other words not found on the dictated pages.

Please note that this week’s spelling test will be on Friday, September 13, 2019, and the test will include 1st grade Red Words and the Green word Pattern, “oa” words.

Thank you,

Mrs. Arp, Mr. Inman
