Spelling Information for the Week of January 27, 2020, to January 31, 2020

Dear Parents,

Red Word Focus

We will continue to learn our 3rd quarter Red Words for a test on Friday. The new 3rd quarter Red Words are as follows: sign, buy, and often. These words are non-decodable words and do not follow the rules of phonics. Students will have a final spelling test over these words and the Red Words (their, should, yellow) next week to show mastery.

Green Word Focus

RF.2.3 Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words

Our “Green Word” pattern/focus for the week will be or as in horn and ar as in start, our final “bossy-r.” Please practice these words as your child brings them home on dictation pages. Weekly spelling words may come from the dictation pages. Students will be expected to apply all classroom information to ten or more of the or and ar patterns on their Friday, January 31st spelling test.

Reading Focus

RL.2.2 Recount stories, including fables and folktales from diverse cultures, and determine their central message, lesson, or moral.

RL.2.9 Compare and contrast two or more versions of the same story (e.g., Cinderella stories) by different authors or from different cultures.

Guided Reading Groups - Our reading focus for the week will continue to be the genre “Fairy Tales.” We will learn to identify character traits for each character, complete a plot diagram, and determine the central message, lesson, or moral of the fairy tale. Last week we read and completed the text, “Red Riding Hood.” This week we will read the text, “Lon Po Po,” and compare and contrast the two versions of the same fairy tale. Our writing focus will be opinion writing, writing to persuade (W.2.1), and our grammar focus will be nouns, proper nouns, and plural nouns. (CCSS.ELA-L2.1C).

Please note that our final spelling test will be on Friday, January 31, 2020.

Thank you,

Mrs. Arp and Mr. Inman
