Dear Parents,

HOMEWORK: Write each 3rd Grade 1st Quarter Red Word 10 times each for Monday’s homework.

Red Word Focus

The Red Words for the week will be the 4th Grade, 1st Quarter Red Words, would, today, about, only, and show. The final test for these words will be on Friday, March 15th. The words are non-decodable words and do not follow the rules of phonics. Students will take a test over these Red Words on Friday, March 15, 2019. We will have five new Red Words next week from the 4th grade list.

Green Word Focus

RF.2.3 Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words

Our Green Word pattern will be –igh. These three letters, igh, make one sound (igh) as in light. Please practice these words as your child brings them home on dictation pages. Weekly spelling words will come from the dictation pages. Students will be expected to apply all classroom information to ten or more words on their Friday, March 15, 2019, spelling test.

Reading Focus

Our reading focus will continue to be the famous dogsledding race, the Iditarod, and the history associated with this event. The students will be reading one of the following selections: Balto of the Blue Dawn, Silver, or Dog Diaries, Togo. (CCSS.ELA-ITERACY.RL.2.3) Students will complete a book study during Guided Reading time each day. Our writing focus will continue to be opinion writing (CCSS. ELA-W2.1), and our grammar focus will be identifying and applying pronouns and reflexive pronouns into our writing. CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.2.1.C

On Friday, March 15, 2019, the spelling test will include the Red Words, would, today, about, only, and show and the Green Word Pattern words that contain “-igh” as in light.
