Math - Graphs/Operations and Algebraic Thinking

Spelling: Study for the final Red Word test for the year! Students will be expected to write all of the 2nd grade Red Words/3rd Grade Red Words. We will also have a Green Word test over the vowel teams ay, oe, and ea.

Weekly Focus Information for the Week of May 3, 2021 to May 7, 2021

Spelling:

This week we will take our summative test over the complete 2nd grade Red Word list and 3rd grade Red Word list for the year. The final Red Word test will be on Friday, May 7, 2021. Our review “Green Word Pattern” phonics lesson this week will be the vowel teams oe (toe), ea (head), and ay (play).

Red Words

RF.2.3 Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words

“Red Words” are non-phonetic words that do not follow the rules and cannot be sounded out.

The 2nd grade Red Word review words are as follows: each, call, goes, pull, girl, white, talk, friend, which, very, many, also, black, these, why, around, don’t, push, its, it’s, eye, above, always, brother, other, sister, knew, were, yellow, should, their, sign, buy, often, almost, does, eight, father, part, floor, sure, ghost, oil, page, shoe, and tear. The 3rd grade Red Word review words are as follows: full, than, much, would, today, about, only, show, thought, great, across, because, listen, watch, mother, already, shall, though, whose, you’re, people, knock, against, brought, another, parent, enough, bury, clothes, sound, whole, through, world, and anyone.

We will study these words throughout the week before we have our final spelling test on Friday, May 7th.

Green Word Pattern Focus

RF.2.3 Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words

Our “Green Word” pattern/focus for the week will be a review of the vowel teams, oe as in toe, ea as in head, and ay as in play. Weekly spelling words will come from the dictation pages brought home in your child’s folder. Students will be expected to apply all classroom information to ten or more words on their Friday spelling test.

This week we will continue to study about the sport of baseball and read from the books, The Hero Two Doors Down and the Magic Tree House #29, A Big Day for Baseball.

Writing

With guidance and support from adults, use a variety of digital tools to produce and publish writing, including in collaboration with peers.

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.2.4

Describe how words and phrases (e.g., regular beats, alliteration, rhymes, repeated lines) supply rhythm and meaning in a story, poem, or song.

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.SL.2.5

Create audio recordings of stories or poems; add drawings or other visual displays to stories or recounts of experiences when appropriate to clarify ideas, thoughts, and feelings.

Our writing focus this year will conclude with the writing of several poems that include the poetry elements of rhyme, alliteration, and repetition.

Math

CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.2.MD.D.10

Draw a picture graph and a bar graph (with single-unit scale) to represent a data set with up to four categories. Solve simple put-together, take-apart, and compare problems1 using information presented in a bar graph.

CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.2.MD.D.9

Generate measurement data by measuring lengths of several objects to the nearest whole unit, or by making repeated measurements of the same object. Show the measurements by making a line plot, where the horizontal scale is marked off in whole-number units.

We will begin our “Count By ___” this week. We will start with counting by 2’s. This activity sets us up for success in third grade by developing mastery of our multiplication facts. We will also be reading and drawing bar graphs to represent a given data set. We will conclude our week by reading and drawing a line plot to represent a given data set and reviewing several common core math standard activities.

Science/Social Studies

Life Science/Interactions with Habitats

This week we will learn how living things like worms and beavers cause change on Earth.
