Spelling Information for the Week of December 18, 2017 to December 22, 2017

Dear Parents,

Red Words: Red Words: don’t, push, around, above, eye, it’s

Red Word Focus

The review Red Words for the week are don’t, push, around, above, eye, and it’s. These words are non-decodable words and do not follow the rules of phonics. I have extended the time for mastery of these words. Please remember, each student must receive a 100 percent for two weeks in a row to receive a final grade for all red words.

Green Word Focus

RF.2.3 Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words

Our “Green Word” pattern/focus for the week will be diphthong ou - /ow/ as in ouch. Students will be given words that contain this ou pattern throughout the week. Please practice these words as your child brings them home on dictation pages. Weekly spelling words may come from the dictation pages. Students will be expected to apply all classroom information to ten or more “ou” words on their Friday spelling test.

Reading Focus

Our focus text for the week is a surprise. Students will receive a text on Tuesday to read and complete a STEM activity. We will continue to use information gained from the illustrations and words in a print or digital text to demonstrate understanding of its characters, setting, or plot (CCSS.ELA- RL.2.7). Our writing focus continues to be opinion writing (CCSS. ELA-W2.1), and our grammar focus will be pronouns/reflexive pronouns (CCSS.ELA-L2.1C).

Please note that our final spelling test will be on Friday, December 22, 2017.

Thank you,

Mrs. Arp
