Spelling Information for the Week of October 16, 2017, to October 20, 2017

Dear Parents,

HOMEWORK: Write each red word 5 times each for Monday’s homework.

2nd Grade Red Words: very, which

Vocabulary: pond, shaped

RF.2.3 Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words.

Red Word Focus

Once again, we will focus on the 2nd grade Red Words very and which. These words will be on our Friday spelling test. Please remember that these words are non-decodable words and do not follow the rules of phonics.

Green Word Focus

Our “Green Word” focus this week will be “open” and “closed” syllables. A closed syllable is one in which the single vowel makes a short sound. All words and syllables to this point have been closed. An open syllable contains a single vowel that is not followed by another letter: she, he, no, so, go. Please practice the activity or dictation pages with open and closed syllables. Weekly spelling words may come from these pages. Students will be expected to apply all classroom information to ten or more open or closed syllable words on the Friday, October 20th spelling test.

Vocabulary Focus

RI.2.5 Know and use various text features (e.g., captions, bold print, subheadings, glossaries, indexes, electronic menus, icons) to locate key facts or information in a text efficiently.

RI.2.7 Explain how specific images (e.g., a diagram showing how a machine works) contribute to and clarify a text.

Our spelling test will also include the reading vocabulary words pond and shaped. The vocabulary words are from our informational text selection, Animals Building Homes.

Please note that our final spelling test for all words will be on Friday, October 20, 2017.

Thank you,

Mrs. Arp
