Spelling Information for the Week of September 21st to September 25, 2020

Dear Parents,

Once again, each student will have a weekly “Red Word” test and a “Green Word Pattern” spelling test for the week.

Red Words RF.2.3

“Red Words” are non-phonetic words that do not follow the rules and cannot be sounded out.

Our 1st grade review Red Words are four, gone, green, how, know, live, and odd.

Our 2nd grade Red Words will once again be each, call, and goes.

The final grade for these words will be on Friday, September 25, 2020.

Green Word Pattern RF.2.3

Our “Green Word” pattern for the week will be a review of “magic-e” from the first grade. Students have learned the name of each vowel and its short sound. They have been conditioned to respond to the symbols of the vowels with a short sound and are now asked to change their response to the established cue. When the one-syllable word ends in e, they must change their response to the long sound of the vowel. Students will be expected to apply this information to seven “magic-e” words on their Friday spelling test. Students will be practicing “magic-e” words on dictation pages. Please practice these words as your child brings them home. Weekly spelling test words will come from these dictation pages. Students will also be asked to apply his/her knowledge of the “magic-e” pattern on several other words not found on the dictated pages.

Reading – RL.2.5, RL.2.7/Writing – W2.3

We will continue to practice and identify the characters, setting, and plot (BME) for various books within our Guided Reading activities. Our writing focus will continue to include narrative writing activities.

Math – 2.0A.2, 2.OA.1

Our math activities include adding and subtracting like units, making a ten to add within 20, and making a ten to add within 100. We will continue to review bonds of ten, doubles, doubles +1, and doubles –1.

Science/Social Studies – Government 2.10, 2.12

We will continue to review our “PAX Vision” kernel and introduce our “PAX Leader” kernel in and out of the classroom.

Thank you,

Mrs. Arp, Mr. Inman
