Spelling Information for the Week of October 17, 2016 to October 21, 2016

Dear Parents,

HOMEWORK: Write each red word and vocabulary word 5 times each for Tuesday’s homework. (many, also, black, numeral, unit, expanded, standard, hundreds, and thousands)

Green Word Study

Our “Green Word” pattern for the week will be a learning about syllabication which is a strategy employed in order to become a more accurate reader. A syllable is a word or a part of a word that consists of an uninterrupted expression of sound and includes at least one vowel. By breaking a word into small, manageable syllables, identifying the vowel sounds within each syllable, and sounding out a word syllable by syllable, the reader learns the process of syllabication step by step. Students can learn to see the parts of a word, hear the individual sounds, and then read the word. Our “green word” focus this week will be on “open” and “closed” syllables building background for syllabication with detached syllables. We will practice words with detached syllables throughout the week. Students will have these words to practice as well as words we have blended and studied during class. Please practice these words as your child brings them home on dictation pages. Weekly spelling words may come from the dictation pages. Students will be expected to apply all classroom information to ten or more open and closed syllable words on the Friday, October 21st spelling test.

Vocabulary Study

Our spelling test will also include the math vocabulary words numeral, unit, expanded, standard, hundreds, and thousands.

Red Word Study

Our three new red words will be the words many, also, and black. These words are non-decodable words and do not follow the rules of phonics.

Please remember, each student must receive a 100 percent for two weeks in a row to receive a final grade for these red words.

Please note that our final spelling test will be on Friday, October 21, 2016.

Thank you,

Mrs. Arp
