Spelling Information for the Week of October 19-23, 2015

“Red Words”

gone, pretty, there, and were.

If a student did not master a second grade red word for the first quarter on his/her test last week, they will receive these additional words to also practice for the final test on Friday. Because mastery of all second grade words is required, students will be tested on these words weekly until they are mastered.

“Green Words” Dictation Words: cheap, peak, soap, groan, quail, stain, sank, think, honk, chunk

This week continues our green word review for the first quarter. We will be reviewing vowel teams “ea,” “ai,” “oa,” and –nk words. As stated previously, the vowel teams are often introduced by simply noting that “When two vowels go walking, the first one does the talking.” The vowel team “ai” says long a. The vowel team “ea” says long e. The vowel team “oa” says long o. We will also be reviewing the combinations of sounds –ink, –ank, –onk, –unk that are taught as endings to simplify the breaking down of words for spelling and reading.

Students will be expected to apply this information to vowel team words and –nk words on their Friday spelling test. There will be several diction sheets completed during class the week that the students will bring home for spelling word practice. Students will also be required to apply “vowel team patterns” and –nk endings to other words on the spelling test.
