Spelling Information for the Week of September 6, 2016 to September 9, 2016

Dear Parents,

Green Word Study

Our “Green Word” pattern for the week includes learning about “magic e.” The concept of magic e is a difficult one for many children. They have learned the name of each vowel and its short sound. The students, conditioned to respond to the symbols of the vowels with a short sound, are now asked to change their response to the established cue. When the one-syllable word ends in e, they must change their response to the long sound of the vowel.

When introducing this new sound for the vowel, we prefer to use the term “name of the vowel” rather than “long vowel,” as the students have been taught that the vowel has a name and “says” a particular sound. We will practice spelling and writing words with “magic e” during class each day. Please practice these words as your child brings them home on dictation pages. Weekly spelling words may come from the dictation pages. Students will be expected to apply all classroom information to ten “magic e” words on their Friday spelling test.

Vocabulary Study

Our spelling test will also include six vocabulary study words that are from our reading selection, “Henry and Mudge Under the Yellow Moon.” These words are busy, chipmunks, south, woods, grew, and turned.

Red Word Study

Our second grade red words for the week are once again each, call, goes, pull, and girl. These words are non-decodable words and do not follow the rules of phonics. Each student must receive a 100 percent on this red word list for two weeks in a row to receive a new list of red words. All students will receive three weeks to master each set of five red words.

Please note that this week’s final spelling test will be on Friday, September 9, 2016.

Thank you,
