Math: Lesson 7 Homework

Spelling: Study for spelling test on Friday.

Dear Parents,

Our spelling words for this week will include two new second grade red words and three first grade red words for review. “Red words” are non-phonetic words that do not follow the rules and cannot be sounded out. The words that cannot be sounded out must be learned in a multisensory way for storage into long-term memory. Red words, also known as sight words or popcorn words, are red because red is a warning color that tells students to stop decoding and to use their prior knowledge and/or memorization techniques.

2nd Grade Red Words: girl, white

1st Grade Red Words: some, take, who

Homework: Write red words five times each for homework. The homework is due on Tuesday, September 15, 2015.

“Green Words”

Our “Green Word” learning focus this week will be “vowel teams.” The vowel teams are often introduced by simply noting that “When two vowels go walking, the first one does the talking.” The vowel team we will be focusing on this week will be “ea.” The vowel team “ea” says long e.

We will practice spelling and writing words throughout the week with the vowel team pattern of “ea.” Students will be expected to apply this information to ten words for our spelling test next week which will be on Friday, September 18, 2015.
