Spelling Information for the Week of February 25, 2019 to March 1, 2019

Dear Parents,

Red Words: full, than, much

Red Word Focus

The Red Words for the week will be 3rd Grade, 1st Quarter Red Words. The words are as follows: full, than, and much. These words are non-decodable words and do not follow the rules of phonics. Please remember, each student will have two weeks in a row to practice and should receive a 100% as a final grade for the Red Words full, than, and much. Students will take their first test over these Red Words on Friday, March 1, 2019.

Green Word Focus

RF.2.3 Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words

Our “Green Word” pattern/focus for the week will be a review of our 1st through 3rd quarter vowel teams. The vowel teams for this week are as follows: ea (leaf), ee (tree), ai (sail), ay (play), oa (boat), and oe (toe). Please practice these words as your child brings them home on dictation pages. Weekly spelling words will come from the dictation pages. Students will be expected to apply all classroom information to ten or more vowel team words on their Friday, March 1, 2019, spelling test.

Reading Focus

Our reading focus will be the famous dog sledding race, the Iditarod, and the history associated with this event. The students will be reading one of the following selections: Balto of the Blue Dawn, Silver, or Dog Diaries, Togo. (CCSS.ELA-ITERACY.RL.2.3) Students will complete a book study during Guided Reading time each day. Our writing focus will continue to be opinion writing (CCSS. ELA-W2.1), and our grammar focus will be forming and using frequently occurring irregular plural nouns. CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.2.1.B

On Friday, March 1, 2019, the spelling test will include all of the Red Words (full, than, and much) and Green Word Pattern vowel teams (ea, ee, ai, ay, oa, and o).

Thank you,

Mrs. Arp and Mrs. Dillion
