Spelling Information for the Week of January 22, 2019 to January 25, 2019

Dear Parents,

Red Word Focus

The 4th Quarter Red Words for the week will be the words sure, ghost, and oil. These words are non-decodable words and do not follow the rules of phonics. Please remember, each student will have two weeks in a row to practice to receive a 100% as a final grade for the Red Words sure, ghost, and oil. Students will take a final test over these Red Words on Friday, January 25, 2019.

Green Word Focus

RF.2.3 Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words

Our “Green Word” pattern/focus for the week will continue to be the r-controlled vowels. These are introduced as the three / ər /’s or the bossy r. The spelling er is the most frequently used of the three / ər /’s and should be the first choice when making an educated guess about how to spell a word with an / ər /.Please practice all words as your child brings them home on dictation pages. Weekly spelling words will come from the dictation pages. Students will also be expected to apply this pattern to other words for a total of 10 or more er, / ər /, pattern words on their Friday, January 25, 2019, spelling test.

Reading Focus

Our reading focus will continue to be the genre, “Fairy Tales.” Students will identify the elements of fairy tales, recount stories to determine their central message, lesson, or moral, identify character traits, and learn to compare and contrast two versions of the same story. (CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.2.2, 2.9).This week we will begin the selection, Lon Po Po, A Red-Riding Hood Story from China by Ed Young. Our writing focus will continue to be opinion writing (CCSS. ELA-W2.1), and our grammar focus will be a review of nouns and an introduction to frequently occurring irregular nouns. CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.2.1.B

On Friday, January 25, 2019, the spelling test will include the Red Words sure, ghost, and oil, and the Green Word Pattern er as in verb or number.

Thank you,

Mrs. Arp/Mrs. Dillion
