Spelling Information for the Week of October 22, 2018, to October 26, 2018

Dear Parents,

New Red Words: always, brother, other

Review Red Words: above, eye, it’s

RF.2.3 Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words.

Red Word Focus

This week we will review the Red Words above, eye, it’s. Our new Red Words are always, brother, and other. Please remember that these words are non-decodable words, and they do not follow the rules of phonics.

Green Word Pattern Focus

RF.2.3 Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words

Our “Green Word” pattern focus for the week will be learning about the digraph, ph—that is, two letters together that make one sound. The ph stands for the same sound as the letter f /f/. The /f/ sound in the daily dictated words should be spelled with ph.

Please practice these words as your child brings them home on dictation pages. Weekly spelling words may come from the dictation pages. Students will be expected to apply all class-room information to ten or more “ph” words on their Friday spelling test.

Reading Focus

CCSS.RI.2.5

Know and use various text features (e.g., captions, bold print, subheadings, glossaries, indexes, electronic menus, icons) to locate key facts or information in a text efficiently.

This week begins our study of informational text. Students will be reading from various informational texts to identify a variety of text features. Mrs. Arp’s Guided Reading Group will be reading from the selection, “Milton Hershey.” Mrs. Dillion’s Guided Reading Group will be reading from the selection, “Milton Hershey: Hershey’s Chocolate Creator.” The students will have the following vocabulary words.

Mrs. Arp: apprentice, arena, energy, generous, invent, World War II; Mrs. Dillion: apprentice, biological, cultural, debt, economy, enroll, Great Depression, Mennonite, paraffin, refinery.

Please note, the students will only be expected to know and write our new and old Red words for this week on the Friday, October 26, 2018, Spelling Test.

Thank you,

Mrs. Arp/Mrs. Dillion
