Spelling Information for the Week of January 14, 2019 to January 18, 2019

Dear Parents,

HOMEWORK: Write each 4th Quarter Review Red Word 10 times each for Monday’s homework.

Red Words: father, part, floor

Red Word Focus

The 4th Quarter Red Words for the week will be the words father, part, and floor. These words are non-decodable words and do not follow the rules of phonics. Please remember, each student must receive a 100 percent for two weeks in a row to receive a final grade for the Red Words father, part, and floor. Students will take a final test over these Red Words on Friday, January 18, 2019.

Green Word Focus

RF.2.3 Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words

This week continues our Green Word Pattern for the r-controlled vowels. These are introduced as the three / ər /’s or the bossy r. The second most commonly used of the three / ər /’s is ir as in bird. The least commonly used of the three / ər /’s is ur as in turn, and it is our last choice when making an educated guess about how an / ər / word is spelled. Please practice all words as your child brings them home on dictation pages. Weekly spelling words will come from the dictation pages. Students will also be expected to apply this pattern to other words for a total of 15 or more ir and ur pattern words on their Friday, January 18, 2019, spelling test.

Reading Focus

Our reading focus will continue to be the genre, “Fairy Tales.” Students will identify the elements of fairy tales, recount stories to determine their central message, lesson, or moral, identify character traits, and learn to compare and contrast two versions of the same story. (CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.2.2, 2.9). Because of the 2nd Grade Gifted Testing this week, we will not read a new fairy tale in our Guided Reading groups. Next week, however, we will begin the selection, Lon Po Po, a Red-Riding Hood Story from China by Ed Young. Our writing focus will continue to be opinion writing (CCSS. ELA-W2.1), and our grammar focus will be a review of nouns and an introduction to frequently occurring irregular nouns. CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.2.1.B

On Friday, January 18, 2019, the spelling test will include the Red Words father, part, and floor and the Green Word Pattern ir as in bird and ur as in turn.

Thank you,

Mrs. Arp/Mrs. Dillion
