Weekly Focus Information for the Week of January 11, 2021 to January 15, 2021

Dear Parents,

Spelling:

This week we will have our summative test for the 2nd Quarter, second grade “Red Words.” Our new “Green Word Pattern” phonics lesson will be “ew” as in few and grew.

Red Words RF.2.3

“Red Words” are non-phonetic words that do not follow the rules and cannot be sounded out.

Our “Red Word” spelling test this week will be a summative test over the following 2nd quarter Red Words: many, also, black, these, why, around, don’t, push its, it’s, eye, and above.

(First Quarter 3rd Grade Red Words: full, than, much, would, today, about, only, show, thought, great)

We will once again study these words throughout the week before we have our weekly spelling test.

The final grade for these words will be on Friday, January 15, 2021.

Green Word Pattern Focus

RF.2.3 Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words

Our “Green Word” pattern/focus for the week will be “ew” as in few and grew. Students once learned they could spell /oo/ as in zoo and long u—u-consonant –magic e as in cute. Now we will learn these sounds can also be represented with “ew” as in few and grew. Please practice these words as your child brings them home on dictation pages. Weekly spelling words may come from the dictation pages. Students will be expected to apply all classroom information to ten or more “ew” words on their Friday spelling test.
