Homework:

Reading: It is "Right to Read week." It is very important that your child reads on a nightly basis. To document the reading time for tonight and the rest of the week (Monday through Thursday), please fill out the nightly yellow reading slips and return each one to school the very next day. Our class will compete against the rest of the classes to receive a milkshake party for the class that reads the most minutes.

Math: Lesson 26, Problem Set

Spelling: Write the Red Words shall, though, and whose 3 times each and also write each word in a sentence for Monday’s homework.

Weekly Focus Information for the Week of March 1, 2021 to March 5, 2021

Spelling:

We will have three new 3rd quarter, 2nd grade Red Words (3rd grade Red Words. The Red Words are shall, though, and whose. Our “Green Word Pattern” phonics lesson this week will be the review of the vowel teams oa as in (boat), ai as in (paid), and ea as in (each).

Red Words

RF.2.3 Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words

“Red Words” are non-phonetic words that do not follow the rules and cannot be sounded out.

Our new 3rd quarter, 3rd grade “Red Word” spelling words this week will be the following: shall, though, and whose. We will study these words throughout the week before we have our weekly spelling test on Friday, March 5th.

Green Word Pattern Focus

RF.2.3 Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words

Our “Green Word” pattern/focus for the week will be the review of the following vowel teams: oa as in boat, ai as in paid, and ea as in each. Please practice these vowel team pattern words as your child brings them home on dictation pages. Weekly spelling words will come from the dictation pages. Students will be expected to apply all classroom information to ten or more of the vowel teams “oa,” “ai”, and “ea” words on their Friday spelling test.

Reading

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.2.9

Compare and contrast two or more versions of the same story (e.g., Cinderella stories) by different authors or from different cultures.

We will once again focus on our standard of RL.2.9 and RL2.2. We will learn the story elements for a “Tall Tale” (Fiction/Fantasy/Folk Tale). We will read several tall tales, discuss, and identify “Tall Tale” story elements for each selection. Our writing focus will continue to be informational writing activities within our reading and social studies. (W2.2)

Math

Add up to four two-digit numbers using strategies based on place value and properties of operations.

CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.2.NBT.B.7

Add and subtract within 1000, using concrete models or drawings and strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction; relate the strategy to a written method. Understand that in adding or subtracting three-digit numbers, one adds or subtracts hundreds and hundreds, tens and tens, ones and ones; and sometimes it is necessary to compose or decompose tens or hundreds.

Explain why addition and subtraction strategies work, using place value and the properties of operations.1

Our focus will be using strategies for composing tens and hundreds. We will continue to use our place value chart and to use the written vertical method with math drawings to represent the composition when adding a two-digit to a three-digit addend. We will begin Topic E later in the week which continues to support learning how to subtract a two-digit number from a three-digit number, and complete Lessons 23 - 25.

Science/Social Studies

Our Science focus will be conducting experiments showing how air is present in the atmosphere.
