Spelling Information for the Week of December 11, 2017 to December 15, 2017

Dear Parents,

Red Word Focus

The new Red Words for the week are above, eye, and it’s. These words are non-decodable words and do not follow the rules of phonics. The Review Red Words are don’t, push, and around. Please remember, each student must receive a 100 percent for two weeks in a row to receive a final grade for all red words.

Green Word Focus

RF.2.3 Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words

Our “Green Word” pattern/focus for the week will be the learning about words in our language that are spelled the same and sound differently. The students know one way to spell /oo/--as in zoo, and now they will learn another way to spell it—ew as in grew. Students also know a way to spell /u/--u-consonant –magic e as in cute. We will now learn another way to spell –ew as in few. Students will be given words that contain this –ew pattern throughout the week. Please practice these words as your child brings them home on dictation pages. Weekly spelling words may come from the dictation pages. Students will be expected to apply all classroom information to ten or more “-ew” words on their Friday spelling test.

Reading Focus

Our continued reading focus will be Miss Holly is Too Jolly, a realistic fiction by Dan Gutman, in the series, My Weird School. There will be a final reading test and vocabulary test over the book, Miss Holly is Too Jolly, on Friday, December 15th. We will continue to use information gained from the illustrations and words in a print or digital text to demonstrate understanding of its characters, setting, or plot (CCSS.ELA- RL.2.7). Our writing focus continues to be opinion writing (CCSS. ELA-W2.1), and our grammar focus will be pronouns/reflexive pronouns (CCSS.ELA-L2.1C).

Please note that our final spelling test will be on Friday, December 15, 2017.

Thank you,

Mrs. Arp
