Spelling Information for the Week of January 6, 2020, to January 10, 2020

Dear Parents,

Red Word Focus

The next three Red Words for the 3rd quarter are knew, sister, and were. Please review our first three Red Words for the 3rd quarter which were always, brother, and other. These words are non-decodable words and do not follow the rules of phonics. Students will have to show mastery of these words over a two week period.

Green Word Focus

RF.2.3 Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words

Our “Green Word” pattern/focus for the week will be the introduction to the r-controlled vowels. These are introduced as the three / ər /’s or the bossy r. The spelling er is the most frequently used of the three / ər /’s and should be the first choice when making an educated guess about how to spell a word with an / ər /. Please practice these words as your child brings them home on dictation pages. Weekly spelling words may come from the dictation pages. Students will be expected to apply all classroom information to ten or more of the / ər / pattern on their Friday, January 10, 2020, spelling test.

Reading Focus

RL.2.9 Compare and contrast two or more versions of the same story (e.g., Cinderella stories) by different authors or from different cultures.

RF.2.4 Read with sufficient accuracy and fluency to support comprehension.

Our focus for the week will be the reading of fables. We will learn to identify the elements of a fable, character traits of each character, and the moral or lesson of the fable. Our writing focus continues to be informational (W.2.2), and our grammar focus will be nouns, proper nouns, and plural nouns. (CCSS.ELA-L2.1C).

Please note that our final spelling test will be on Friday, January 10, 2020, over the Red Words knew, sister, and were, as well as the Green Word pattern, er (Bossy-r) as in fern and her.

Thank you,

Mrs. Arp, Mr. Inman
